Walking Home From School
This is a diorama I did for the Merrell Shoes "Favorite Fall Memory" diorama contest on Deviant Art.
My favorite fall memory was walking home from in school in Massachusetts. Every fall, a new school year began with a new classroom, new classmates and a new teacher. Summer was over and fall had begun. Walking home each afternoon was a special time for me. Maybe this was when I decided I wanted to be a teacher. I have been teaching first grade for 25 years now, and even still, each fall holds the excitement of a new school year.
The fall trees and leaves were made by melting red and yellow hard candies. I added branches. I made myself with yarn, fleece material, sculpting clay and parts of a toy figure.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! I used the contest card found in my Jerry’s Artarama catalog and turned this “trash” into treasure, a treasure chest that is. I used burnt umber Speedball ink to paint the treasure chest, which was great for allowing the lettering on the card to show through. I used Winsor & Newton metallic ink to add gold and silver coins and embellished with pink, purple and blue confetti “jewels”.

We Have Issues. What if we all walked around wearing hats that told exactly how many issues we had?! The word “issues” keeps popping up on all these magazine subscription cards, and so I started thinking about the double meaning for the word. These seemingly perfect women (or Barbies), clearly have issues. I folded the junk mail subscription cards into hats and magazines for these 3 lovely Barbie dolls. I especially can relate to the
magazine cards that say, “Priority Handling” and “This is your last chance.”

Art Project for "Embracing Our Differences"
Ringling College of Art & Design, Sarasota, FL
In making a piece for “Embracing Our Differences”, I started thinking about how diverse our world is. We have so many different religions, races and lifestyles. I realized, too, how fragile our world really is, like an egg. I photographed a carton of eggs, in the green grass. I spray painted the carton blue and drew symbols to represent some of our differences on brown and white eggs. The final egg (the world) is broken, showing how fragile our world is and how important it is to be sensitive and respectful of these differences. I teach first grade in a very diverse community and, as a teacher of young children, I am constantly mindful of how important it is to treat each other with respect and caring. This piece won "Best in Show" in an outdoor display at the Sarasota Bayfront in Sarasota, Florida.

I painted the window sign for "Platterpus Too, Like a Record Store Used To Be", in Easthampton, MA. The store specializes in vintage vinyl, so I used a 70s retro design. It is done in acrylics on the inside of the window, so all lettering was done in reverse.

I designed these Beatles Converse Sneakers by first painting The Beatles on white canvas and adhering it to the sides of the sneakers, allowing for the lace holes. I then glued on the "Strawberry Fields" sequined strawberries for added embellishment.
